FUTURE of the MUSEUM PROJECT

The Future of the Museum Project builds upon the agreement between Atlanta`s High Museum and the Louvre Museum, Paris to bring major collections from the Louvre to Atlanta over the next three years. The first phase in Spring 2007 includes a lecture series on "The Future of the Museum" at the High sponsored by Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). A digital exhibition in the Global Learning Center (GLC) of Georgia Tech will accompany the lectures.

A project seminar in the Digital Media graduate program of the School of Literature, Communication and Culture is creating the interactive GLC exhibition. The Digital Louvre exhibit invite visitors, both on-site and off-site, to curate their own exhibition of paintings and sculptures from the Louvre, displaying them on HD screens at GLC. In addition to posing questions involving digital media research, virtual curatorship explores public access and participation in a future museum.

Future development includes:

  • ongoing Project Studio involving the creation of a digital art laboratory at Georgia Tech in conjunction with the High Museum and the Louvre
  • work with GPTV`s IPTV network to disseminate the Atlanta-Louvre Project to public schools within Georgia
  • research with museums in the United States and Europe including Czechoslovakia, England, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden

Grant development will support the evolving partnership between the High Museum, the Louvre and Georgia Tech. This support will make it possible to build projects that show the many ways that art and technology share creativity and innovation. It will create opportunities for Georgia Tech faculty and students from multiple colleges.

We wish to thank the High Museum, the Louvre, the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Dean, and the McEver Program in Engineering and the Liberal Arts for providing preliminary support and funding for the project.
