Course Description: LCC 3401 provides information regarding the principles and concepts of technical communication and provides opportunities for students to practice technical communication skills in developing proposals, analytical reports, and related oral presentations. The course integrates information delivery through an interactive website with activities in production classrooms containing 25 students. Students will work in interactive Internet environments to develop materials, gather responses, and engage in critical analyses while pursuing collaborative analytic projects.

Beginning with the premise that technical communication both uses and creates information designed for specific purposes in specific communities (those already existing within organizations as well as those created for a unique purpose), this course asks students to explore both primary and secondary research venues (especially electronic ones), to analyze situations and audiences, to work collaboratively in an electronic environment, and to create documents and oral presentations which communicate through effective structure, prose, and visual presentation.

Objectives:

Upon completing Technical Communication Practices, students will be able to do the following:MENU>

  • Analyze communication situations and audiences and use appropriate strategies to advance stated goals
  • Collect and report information thoroughly and accurately
  • Interpret factual information using logical reasoning
  • Organize and display the organizational scheme growing out of the situation and materials
  • Recognize and employ commonly used graphics in oral and written presentations
  • Employ the following basic genres effectively: proposals, analytical reports, oral presentations

    Honor Code

Students and faculty are expected to abide by the Georgia Tech Honor Code.

    Textbook: Anderson: Technical Communication

    Please Note:

  • This course is very challenging and time-consuming. The material is not difficult to learn, but does require effort. Consider your schedule and the effort you're willing to expend before continuing!
  • Examples from books or organization materials are merely examples and should be treated as such. You must use your own judgment concerning aspects of writing that make a document effective. Do not simply rely on another communicator's work as the "right" way to create a document. You may have found an ineffective example!
  • Any student who, because of a disabling condition, may require some special arrangements in order to meet course requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible so that the necessary accommodations can be made.
