The assignments for this course fall under three main categories, workshops, rewrites, and simultaneous submissions. All assignment instructions can be accessed on T-Square beginning the second week of the semester. All assignments should be uploaded to T-Square as well as submitted in "hard copy" form.
The grading in this class will fall under four general categories:
| Grade Category |
% of final grade |
| Workshop Sessions (15 total, 2 pts. each) |
30 |
| Rewrites (1 total, 10 pts.) |
10 |
| Simultaneous Submissions (3 total - Interim Report and Final Presentation Slides, 10 pts. each; Final Report, 20 pts) |
40 |
| Exams (2 total, 10 pts. each) |

Workshop Sessions
Fifteen of the total 29 class sessions are "workshop sessions." In these class periods, we will workshop drafts of documents and presentations prepared for Senior Design; we will also review writing that was prepared for class. Each of these sessions is worth 2% of the total 100% of the semester grade, and they cannot be made up for any reason. Please visit the page on Workshops to read more about these class periods.
Rewrites
Students enrolled in this class will rewrite two documents that have already been handed in for Senior Design, the Pre-proposal and the Interim Report. In most cases, students enrolled in 3401 will be rewriting documents written collaboratively for Senior Design. Students enrolled in 3401 will be expected to take ownership and responsibility for the ENTIRE document in a rewrite, which means that they will rewrite passages written by other students and restyle the document according to the standards and practices taught in 3401. Student who hand in rewrites in 3401 essentially become editors for these documents, and are therefore responsible for every aspect of quality in the document. These documents will have already been handed in for a grade in Senior Design. Each of these rewrites will be graded like a final draft, using the rubric for the assessment of multimodal communication.
In order to complete these assignments, students should follow the instructions on T-Square.
Simultaneous Submissions
Three documents produced for Senior Design will also be handed in for 3401 as simultaneous submissions (please see Schedule for details--the Interim Report, Final Report, and the Final Presentation Slides. These documents will be handed in 3401 on the same day they are due in Senior Design and will receive a separate grade in 3401. They will be graded according to the rubric for the assessment of multimodal communication.
Students should:
- Submit a workshop draft - Initial drafts of each of simultaneous submissions will be workshopped in 3401 before they are handed in for Senior Design. Students should upload these drafts to the appropriate folder in the Wiki section of the T-Square site for this course, according to the workshop schedule. These workshop drafts will not be graded separately on a scale of A, B, C, D, or F; they will be graded "pass/fail," as part of the final draft grade. If a draft is not completed on time to be workshopped in class, students will receive a "0" for entire "Simultaneous Submission" assignment. Each of these is worth 10% of your final grade, so please take the draft process serious.
- Submit critiques for the five students in your workshop group - Critiques should be longer than three paragraphs and uploaded to the appropriate folder on the Wiki site. Not completing all of the critiques, or submitting short, insubstantial critiques, will result in a failing grade for the entire "Simultaneous Submission."
- Submit the final draft of the document - Simultaneous submissions should uploaded to T-Square and submitted in "hard copy" format. Please clearly indicate on the document which portions of the document were originally composed entirely by you.
Grading of collaboratively written documents - Students enrolled in this course will be handing in simultaneous submissions that were produced collaboratively with ISyE students who are not currently enrolled in this section of 3401. Students in this course will nevertheless be responsible for ensuring the quality of all documents handed in for a grade in 3401. This means that you may want to rewrite portions of collaboratively written documents to meet the standards of this class. This is perfectly acceptable to me. Students in this course may also want to re-style documents or change or replace visuals produced by other students in order to incorporate standards and practices learned in this course. Imagine yourselves as "editors" of these documents rather than the authors of discrete sections within them. Improvements made to the grammar, style, organization, and formatting of these documents in 3401 will no doubt benefit your entire Senior Design group, but I make no guarantees about the grades you receive in Senior Design for these documents. Disagreements with other members of your Senior Design team over revisions to their writing will be worked out between you and your team members. If these disagreements are severe, you may hand in a "3401-only version" of a simultaneous submission that differs from your submission for Senior Design, but I will require that the version handed in for Senior Design also be attached.
Exams
There are two exams in this class. Both of these are take-home exams that require students to apply standards, practices, and lessons learned in this class by styling or rewriting an existing document. Students will have 24 hours to complete these exams and hand them. |
