Assignments for the Semester

Three Tracks

Each student in this class will choose one of three "tracks" for the semester. This track will determine your responsibilities for the class and the types of assignments you will complete throughout the semester.

Track 1: Designers (20 students, 4 teams)

Responsibilities: Designers will create educational and marketing materials for Read Aloud Chattanooga, a community service organization that promotes literacy and reading aloud to children. Designers will also research and write technology grant proposals for Rossville Elementary School. Designers will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions; write a proposal for how to complete the client project; enthusiastically cooperate with the client, the professor, and fellow classmates to address the range of unanticipated challenges and issues that will no doubt arise throughout the semester.

Grade: Workshop (30%) + Track Applications (5%) + Proposal (15%) + Final client project [group project] (25%) + Exams 1 & 2 (20%) + Diagnostic (5%)

Track 2: Communications Specialist (1 student)

Responsibilities: This student will serve as the communications coordinator for the entire project. This student will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions. Coordinate communications between the client, class members, and the professor. Set up and oversee an effective communication strategy for the project. Write a proposal for managing communication within the group.

Grade: Workshop (30%) + Track Applications (5%) + Proposal (15%) + Communication packet (25%) + Exams 1 & 2 (20%) + Diagnostic (5%)

Track 3: Presenter (3-4 students, 1 team)

Responsibilities: These four students will be responsible for two presentations: 1) a research-based presentation to the class on the client, focusing on audience, values, and mission, and 2) the final presentation of client projects to the client. This team will complete both individual and collaborative presentations. Each student will be assigned to one of the three or four design teams above. Presenters will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions; assist their assigned design team during informal workshop sessions; coordinate two presentations during the semester.

Grade: Workshop (30%) + Track Applications (5%) + Research-based presentation on the client (15%) + Final client presentation (25%) + Exams 1 & 2 (20%) + Diagnostic (5%)
