Assignments for the Semester

Four Tracks

Each student in this class will choose one of four "tracks" for the semester. This track will determine your responsibilities for the class and the types of assignments you will complete throughout the semester.

Track 1: Usability Researcher (15 students - 2 user testing teams; 1 survey research team)

Responsibilities: Students in this track will plan and execute usability testing for the SGA. Three groups of five students each will perform user testing and survey research. Usability researchers will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions; research and write a proposal for conducting user testing or survey research on Buzzport; help plan usability testing; be present for and help execute usability testing; cooperate with and support the work of all other students in the class.

Grade: Workshop (30%) + Track Application (5%) + Proposal (15%) + Findings Report [group project] (25%) + 2 Exams (20%) + Diagnostic (5%)

Track 2: Persona Writers (5 students, 1 team)

Responsibilities: Students in this track will create "personas" or detailed profiles of the various user groups for Buzzport. Persona writers will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions; research and write five personas for the SGA; write a proposal suggesting how the SGA should use these personas; be available to assist the usability test teams; cooperate with and assist report writers, communications specialists, and oral presenters.

Grade: Workshop (30%) + Track Application (5%) + Proposal (15%) + Personas [group project] (25%) + 2 Exams (20%) + Diagnostic (5%)

Track 3: Communications Specialist (1 student)

Responsibilities: This student will serve as the communications coordinator for the entire project. This student will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions. Be present for all usability testing. Coordinate communications between the SGA, class members, and the professor. Set up and oversee an effective communication strategy for the project. Write a proposal for managing communication within the group.

Grade: Workshop (30%) + Track Application (5%) + Proposal (15%) + Communication Grade (25%) + 2 Exams (20%) + Diagnostic (5%)

Track 4: Presenter (4 students, 1 team)

Responsibilities: These four students will be responsible for presenting the results of the usability testing to the client, as well as making a presentation of usability methods to the class. The presentation team will also learn conference table presentation style from me and teach it to the other members of the class. This team will complete both individual and collaborative presentations. Each student will be assigned to one of the four usability teams above. They will: be present for and eagerly participate in workshop sessions; help plan usability testing; be present for and help execute usability testing and survey research; coordinate two presentations during the semester: 1) an individual presentation of usability methods for their assigned group, and 2) a final presentation of the research findings to the client at the end of the semester (all four presenters will work collaboratively on this presentation).
