| Purpose: | The final unit examines the utopias and dystopia of industrialization. The readings contrast mechanization as imprisoning the imagination with the cybernetic possibilities of liberation--machine and man as a line of flight from social (particularly capitalist) constructions of the individual. Additionally, by introducing Cubism, Surrealism, and Futurism, students will be able to connect this unit to the problems of space and time, and mind and will presented in the previous units. |
| Part One: | Evaluate industrialization as an imprisoning and/or liberating event in light of the literary texts, theoretical texts, and visual arts presented in this unit. In a written essay, construct an argument meant to convince the reader of your point of view. How does industrialization and modern technology imprison the imagination and/or provide the cybernetic possibilities of liberation. |
| Part Two: | Represent this liberation and/or imprisonment in a hypertext project. The web project--created on the computer as industrial machine--will allow you to use spatial configurations, associative links (much like those of a dream vision), and visual arts to enact the containment and/or liberation. Use multiple discourses incorporating literary, theoretical, and visual texts we've used this semester as well as your own personal anecdotes and opinions. Part two is to be linked from off of your homepage. |
| Schedule: | Group Five will present to the class on Tuesday, 4/21.
Group Six will present on 4/21. The project preperation is due on 4/21. The final project is due on Thursday, 4/30. |
