Assignment 1: Web Analysis |

One website that I visit regularly is www.thefacebook.com. This site is kind of addicting. It is an online directory that connects people from different colleges and universities through social networks. It's also a great way to keep in touch with old and new friends. The different features add to the addictiveness of the site. They allow members to keep up with any new students from their high school, hometown, and current school. Students use the computer the majority of the time and it doesn't take much to visit the Facebook. Being able to communicate with anyone in the US without using money or relocating is the most important aim Facebook represents. The "wall" feature allows the user to leave messages for everyone to see and the "message" feature allows them to send private messages. The "poke" feature can be used to get other's attention. It also has reminders of upcoming birthdays, parties, and advertisements. It does a lot of things similar to what you can do through the mail: send letters, send party invites, and send advertisements without having to leave the room. Another website that I visit regularly is www.xanga.com. This is sort of an online journal. People post how they feel, what's been going on, or whatever they feel to express themselves as often as they want. Also, other members have access to their postings in order to give any feedback or comments they feel necessary. Being able to read how others feel and that you may not be the only one going through downfalls makes one feel better about situations they encounter themselves. And getting feedback lets people know that other's care and that they are interested in what you or what you've said. What makes this site stand out? There is no other way to be able to know what's on people's minds or what's in their journal unless they show it to you; which is less likely to happen. Xanga is also another way to meet new people and keep in touch with old ones. What seems to be the most successful approach in creating a sight's space and establish itself as a place to visit is the use of the conventions of the web and the accessibility of computers. Because computers are widely accessible and almost necessary in today's society, not only does it allow many tasks to be done with ease, but it has provided a way to connect to people and information through the web. The web has become the main mode of communication today.
