LCC 2700: Written Assignments

Written Assignment 2: Due September 9, 2005

Play one of each of the following groups of games for at least 2 hours:

Adventure or Zork
Myst
Grand Theft Auto III/Vice City/San Andreas or The Legend of Zelda (NES version) or Zelda: Wind Waker


What legacy and computational effects make these virtual space feel real? How do you know where you are? How do you know the relationship of your current location to your previous location? What objects and possible events do you expect to find in these spaces? Analyze how space was traversed in the game. How was space organized, what kind of options for movement did you have? What aspects/objects provided a path or desire to follow a certain direction.

Written Assignment 1: Due September 2, 2005

Choose two different websites that you visit regularly. How does each of these websites establish itself as a place (a "site") to visit? Compare and contrast the ways each site uses the conventions of the web, the computer, and the material world to create its space. Which approaches are more or less successful? Why or why not?

Write your answers in an html file named "1.html". Save them to your server space within a folder labeled "assignments." If your naming structure is correct, the link to your assignment should appear in the written assignments page. If it doesn't, please email your professor.
