Assignment 1: The Facebook vs. Wreck Ultimate Web Forum

Two websites that I visit regularly on the internet are www.thefacebook.com and www.netboy34.com/wrecku. I depend on these sites to keep me connected with my peers through the world wide web.

The facebook is more or less an online yearbook, connecting college campuses across the U.S. by allowing the user to create their own profile page, and upload a public photo of themselves. Users can also post and read messages on profiles, privately message other students, advertise, share class schedules, share interests through clubs, groups, and organizations, and send mass emails for campus events and parties.

The wreck Ultimate Forum is an online database of approved registered users that, like the facebook, can create their own profile with an image, and post and read messages sorted into many different forum categories. The forum similarly allows users the privately message other members of the site. It is organized into different major categories, and individual users, depending on their allowed accessibility can view, post, edit, and vote in polls on any of these category topics.

The Ultimate Forum's organization allows users to easily access information on whatever they might log on to find out. Everything is categorized and named, cleaned and updated regularly, and so many users logging on continuously to answer questions and post responses can quickly find what it is they are looking for. The facebook's organization of questions and opinions are not as simple to search through. The only way to leave a message for groups of people to read and answer is through a mass private message, or by posting on a club group, which very few people read. On the other hand, the facebook is very useful to just "say Hi" to a friend or find personal information about a user. All of the profiles are organized the same way, with the same types of information located in the same places on the screen.

In summary, the facebook does an excellent job in doing what it was designed to do: connect students across the States by allowing them to find information about each other, and send simple messages. The Wreck Ultimate forum is a successful site because it also functions how it is supposed to. It allows users to simply find information on specific topics, ask questions, and receive quick responses to those questions.
