FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is STAC? [back to top]

STAC is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science, Technology, and Culture. It is a humanities degree where students are taught to apply critical analysis to the practice of technology, turning the tools typically used for literature and history to science and engineering. Students will study the ways that science and technology influence culture, as well as the ways that culture influences science and technology. Students will also become adept at research, writing, and digital media skills. Students` ability to communicate and cut across the gap between the technical and the liberal arts makes STAC graduates invaluable in today's market.

What do STAC majors do with their degrees? [back to top]

STAC students are equipped with technical, scientific, and cultural skills that few of their peers can match. This combination enables them to pursue a variety of career paths. Recent graduates have secured work in media, computing, marketing, consulting, and education. Other students have successfully pursued graduate study in law, medicine, literature, and other fields.

More information about STAC career options can be found in careers page.

What STAC minors are available and what do I have to do to get one? [back to top]

The School of Literature, Communication, and Culture (LCC) offers three minors: "Film & Media Studies", "Performance Studies" and "Women, Science, and Technology" (jointly offered by School of LCC, School of History, Technology, and Society, and School of Public Policy). These programs typically require fifteen hours of coursework to complete and will appear on your transcript.

For more information about STAC minors, please refer to the Minors&Certificates website or contact Professor Jay Telotte at "jay.telotte[at]lcc.gatech.edu".

Why should I join the STAC program at Georgia Tech rather than pursue a more traditional liberal arts degree at a liberal arts university? [back to top]

As our society becomes increasingly oriented toward science and technology, knowing and understanding the language and implications of the two are crucial. The STaC program is a humanities program that teaches you to do so. In addition to learning traditional liberal arts skills, STAC majors graduate with an above-average comprehension of how science works, how to talk about it, and how it affects our lives. You are able to bridge the communications gap between engineers and "the rest of the world," making you an invaluable resource.
