Practice Exercise on Body Paragraphs


Instructions: Choose 2 of the following topics, create a thesis statement and then write one body paragraph for each topic. Try to choose different types of topics for each thesis/body paragraph--if possible, choose one from each group of questions.

Group A


1. When we return to places we knew as children, we are often surprised at how different these places seem. Compare and/or contrast your impression of some place you knew as a child with your current impression of the same place.

2. What is your most prized possession? Why? (Do NOT write about a person.)

3. Would you like to be a candidate for public office? Why or why not?

Group B

1. Should every able-bodied citizen be required to serve for a certain period of time in some branch of the military service? Why or why not?

2. Should American students be required to learn a second language? Why or why not?

Group C

1. "Television has made America a nation of watchers, not doers." Agree or disagree.

2. Discuss some of the status symbols of today's society.

Group D

1. In your opinion, what invention or discovery has brought about the most far-reaching and lasting changes in our civilization? Explain.
