Certificate in American Literature & Culture
Description
Description
The School of Literature, Communication, and Culture's undergraduate certificate in American Literature allows students to pursue a coherent course of study focusing on American literary and cultural artifacts. Its four-course (twelve-hour) requirement involves study in American literature, American culture, specific authors, and regional or ethnic issues. All the classes fulfill humanities requirements.
Requirements
After completing the ENGL 1101-2 sequence, those pursuing the certificate can fulfill the four-course requirement by taking two courses with an historical basis (the 2-course American literature survey and/or the historical study of literature and technology) and selecting from additional courses which allow the student to pursue specific interests in regional or ethnic American studies. With the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the student may select from among LCC 32xx, 33xx, or 38xx courses when the focus is primarily on American authors or artifacts. During his or her last semester, the student submits a petition for certificate (completed advisement sheet) to the Director of Undergraduate Studies; when it is approved, the certificate is awarded to the student during the final week of the semester.
