RESEARCH GROUPS

Research Groups investigate large problems over multiple years. Research groups carry out more than one research project at a time. LCC graduate students have the opportunity to work on multiple projects simultaneously by enrolling the LCC 6650 Project Studio course.

ADAM Lab

http://adam.lcc.gatech.edu/

The Adaptive Media Lab explores how to create digital media experiences that tailor themselves to individual users. These adaptations may occur for dramatic purposes (e.g. interactive narrative), educational purposes (e.g. serious games), and / or purely for entertainment. This research involves work in design, artificial intelligence, and human computer interaction.

Augmented Environments Lab

http://www.augmentedenvironments.org/lab

The research, design and development activities of the AEL focus putting media in the world around people, using a range of techniques from see-through head-worn displays, video-mixed camera phones, spatialized sound, and video projectors. More generally, we are interested in exploring the potential of interactive computing environments to directly augment a user`s senses with computer generated material.

Digital World & Image Group

http://dwig.lcc.gatech.edu/

Our experiences of physical spaces is increasingly interwoven with digital media. The goal of the Digital World and Image Group is to improve understanding, expression, and creative use of these digital spaces. We look at virtual worlds, video games, mobile networks, and other digital media as places for expression and we work to enrich them through spatial and interactive design.

eTV Prototyping Group

http://etv.gatech.edu/

The eTV Prototyping Group creates prototypical applications on current and hypothetical platforms, using narrative material drawn from actual and planned television shows and from original narratives specifically designed for interactivity. The group has prototyped interactive video applications for delivery on the internet, DVD, and consumer TV platforms.

Experimental Game Lab(EGL)

http://egl.gatech.edu/

The Experimental Game Lab explores the frontiers of gaming. In this interdisciplinary lab, computer scientists, designers and artists work together to push the boundaries of existing genres and create new genres of electronic games. To accomplish this mission, the EGL pursues three interwoven strands: novel game designs that create new player experiences; new technologies, particularly AI technologies, that enable previously impossible design; and investigations of how games function as a medium, including social, cultural and representational aspects of games.

ICE Lab

http://icelab.lcc.gatech.edu/

Fantastic blends of ideas, rich metaphors, social hierarchies, and cultural identities all exemplify the diverse power of imaginative cognition. We explore the intersection of imaginative cognition and computational expression through both theory and practice. Central expressive loci are computational narratives and gaming, no longer construed as escapist play, but rather as a diverse set of media forms that enable active identity play, narrative imagining, social critique via mapping of fantastic worlds onto real life, and more. Algorithmic and knowledge-representational innovations are crucial for enabling these culturally engaged possibilities.

Synaesthetic Media Lab (Synlab)

http://synlab.gatech.edu/

Synlab is interested in exploring emerging modalities in new media. Our research focuses on tangible interaction and sensing technologies supporting creative expression that bridges the physical and digital worlds. Applications range across media arts, entertainment and educational domains.
