English 1102 - Freshman Composition II
English 1102 at Georgia Tech is a writing-intensive seminar that builds upon the skills and insights gained from students studies of culture, science and technology in English 1101. In this seminar, students examine literary and film texts through a cultural studies perspective with the aim of producing a comprehensive research project at the end of the term. The 1102 seminars at Georgia Tech continue to focus on the relationship between scientific texts interpreted broadly to include not only written language, but also films, photographs, electronic media and other meaningful artifacts of culture and everyday life and practices. English 1102, however, makes use of literary representations to consider how technology has influenced economic, social and political relationships. Topics explored in recent courses include the dynamics of globalization, science and modern arts movements, the history of film, and virtual realities. See topics for Fall 2006.
As with 1101, English 1102 at Georgia Tech is a rigorous seminar that requires students to complete substantial critical reading and writing assignments and to participate actively in classroom discussions. The course culminates with a research project in which students identify a topic, locate and review relevant sources, and compile a working bibliography. Throughout the course, students work with peers and instructors in both traditional classrooms and virtual environments to share ideas, test arguments, and polish their prose. English 1102 prepares students for their later work at Georgia Tech by teaching them how to conduct Web-based and library research projects, assess their results, and present those results in formal written and oral arguments.
